Homosexuality is not illegal in Uruguay. There are no specific laws against homosexuality. The age of consent is 18. In August 2003 a new law came in force protecting members of sexual minorities from "physical and printed homophobic abuse". A prison sentence can be enforced against perpetrators. On the other hand, there are some laws put into effect by the authorities "to protect the society from acts against decency". Practice of any sexual act in public can be punished with up to 24 hours detention. Congress passed a law permitting registered partnerships in November 2007. It is a prerequisite that the couples in question have been together for at least five years. The law covers old age pension rights, inheritance law and the rearing of children. Montevideo has an old architectural heritage, with beautiful squares and green areas. The city has a very dynamic cultural life throughout the year, particularly in February during the Carnival that includes many other activities. In addition, a law permitting homosexuals adoption rights was passed in September 2009, making Uruguay a real inspiration for the entire South American continent. Gay life in Montevideo is exciting and offers a vast variety of places of amusement exclusively for gay men. The best season to visit Uruguay is summer (October to April). Especially attractive for the visitor is the bathing resort Punta del Este, known as the "Star of the Golden Coast". Tourists from all over the world come to enjoy the sea sport facilities, as well as the night life in casinos and discos. Close to Punta del Este is the nudist beach "Chihuahua", with large stretches of white sand and dense green forests.
