On November 14, 2007, the Nicaraguan national assembly passed a new penal code. On the 9th July 2008 the new Nicaraguan Penal Code came into force. Article 240 has finally been banned. This article defined sexual activities between consenting, homosexual adults as "sodomy" and was an offence, subject to punishment. This amendment to the penal code was achieved by local human rights groups as well as amnesty international and the Hirschfeld-Eddy-Stiftung.
