Guadeloupe belongs to France and with it to the European Union. The legal situation corresponds to that in France. The island lying in the Caribbean exists geologically of two parts linked by Mangrove forests: the flat, white sandy area Grande-Terre with the economic center and international airport Pointe-à-Pitre (several times daily there are direct connections to Paris) and the tropical, overgrown Basse-Terre with its black sands from the active volcano. The offshore islands Marie Gallant (still very originally) and Les Saintes (very touristic, but with Honeymoon lodgings, bays and beaches) invite investigation, as do the volcano, big and small waterfalls, the diving paradise of Jacques Cousteau, colourful markets. The standard of living, levels of medical care and the infrastructure are high thanks to France and the EU. For favourable accommodation: see Gîtes de France.
