The laws in the Dominican Republic make no distinction between homosexual and straight relations between adults (over 18 years). However, Article 330 of the penal code punishes "every violation of decorum and good behaviour on public streets" with a penalty of up to two years in prison, so it is advisable not to display too much affection in public, although this law is rarely applied. Other discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation does not appear prevalent. As in many Spanish-speaking Catholic countries a discrimination and segregation applies between different economic groups. A large percentage of the male population appears to be bisexual. Many gay men lead double lives, due to family restraints and general attitudes towards homosexuality. Santo Domingo is developing a small, but interesting gay scene, with a couple of nightspots and is well worth a visit. The gay movement is slow, although the first (and last) Pride parade took place in 2001. The media has a refreshingly gay-friendly attitude.
