( France.) Homosexuality is legal in New Caledonia. The French penal code is in effect here. The equal age of consent of 16 was introduced in 1982. However, the newly introduced partnership laws in France ("PaCS") - a registered partnership which applies to both lesbian and gay as well as to straight couples, do not apply in New Caledonia. The island New Caledonia is not a classical gay destination, but is developing a small gay scene with bars and clubs in the capital city. The island is a tropical paradise and is the third largest of the South Pacific islands with white, sandy beaches lined with coconut palms and aquamarine lagoons. Nude bathing is however illegal.
