On the Fiji Islands the arrest gay men charged on sexual grounds have ceased. The unofficial age of consent is 16 years. Until recently homosexual actions were punishable. Even the "attempt" of homosexual action could be prosecuted. However, the government felt constrained to react to the tourism industry, which increases yearly by about 10%, particularly from Australia and New Zealand. In 2005 the arrest and conviction of an Australian caused a diplomatic incident.
