Bulgaria

In Bulgaria the age of consent is set at 14 for both homosexuals and heterosexuals. In certain cases, sex between men under the age of 18 is illegal. Registered partnership does not exist. Bulgaria's recent inclusion into the EU has promoted some improvements, such as the introduction of new regulations against sexual orientation discrimination in the workplace. Since the 1st January 2004 a new anti-discrimination paragraph exists, which aims to protect gay men and lesbians from homophobic attacks, although until now no improvement can be mentioned. Even in the capital, Sofia, homophobia is wide spread in several social groups. A gay scene has yet to develop. A conservative basis exists and only the younger generation is more tolerant. Politicians are not prepared to address this problem. Seldom does anyone come "out" in public. In the press the subject homosexuality is dismissed as pedophile behavior. Extremists throwing rocks, bottles and gasoline bombs attacked the Bulgarian capital's first gay pride parade event which took place on the 28th June 2008. Around 150 participants were protected by the police during the march. Bulgaria is famous for its coastline along the Black Sea; for its mountain landscape and forests; incredible ancient culture. The reasonable prices tend to attract a special type of visitor.
