Homosexual activity is illegal, punishable according to Islamic Laws which were re-introduced in 1990 and according to paragraph 377 with life in prison, corporal punishment of 100 lashes or even death by stoning. Despite the strict laws of Islam regarding moral standards, gay men, transvestites and transsexuals live relatively undisturbed from the police. On the other hand they cannot expect much protection from the authorities. The general population and the family does not see homosexuality in a positive light at all, but is generally tolerant enough to accept the situation as long as they are not affected. There is no gay movement or gay groups in Pakistan. In many of the larger cities in Pakistan, as in many Islamic countries, there are numerous internet cafes in which contacts are made via chat rooms. The subject homosexuality is a popular subject, although a traditionally hidden topic passed on by word of mouth. Prostitution is banned, but is present to the trained eye. Cruising takes place primarily at bus terminals, train stations and at certain points along national roads, even outside the large cities, especially at well established roadside stops for trucks. Here you might even find prostitutes.
