In Zambia homosexual acts are illegal between men of any age under Sec. 155-158 of the Penal Code. The maximum sentence applicable is fourteen years imprisonment. In Zambian society, even among the more "liberal" urban population, homosexuality is a taboo and homosexuals are stigmatized. At the beginning of 2009 the Vice President of Zambia called upon fellow citizens to denounce all homosexuals in the country, and thereby bringing about their imprisonment. Zambia is one of the poorest countries in the world, where many people must survive on less than one US Dollar per day. The average life expectancy (also affected by the local AIDS epidemic) has dropped in the last fifteen years from 60 to 38 years.
