Cairns is only a two hour and thirty minute flight from Sydney and is in the heart of tropical north Queensland. Its international airport and proximity to one of Australia's greatest tourist attractions, the Great Barrier Reef, makes Cairns a busy tourist destination. The best time to visit is from May through to October: as the tropical climate means a wet season from November to April. Cairns is a popular travel destination because of its ideal location for setting out on leisure activities such as sailing to the Great Barrier Reef or touring the Daintree Rainforest. Just one hour north of Cairns is Port Douglas, a true resort village beside the sea. With dazzling blue skies and long white beaches it has become an international holiday Mecca with budget to five star accommodation, shops, galleries, and enticing restaurants. It maintains an air of casual affluence, attracting a happy mix of backpackers, gay and lesbian travelers and "laid-back" travellers.
